The research project “The Household as Organization” is carried out by Research Director Dr. Signe Boeskov at the Danish Center for Manor House Research and was launched in 2022 with support from the Grosserer N.C. Nielsen Foundation.

The project examines in detail the household’s structure and staffing, as well as daily life and tasks during selected periods in the 18th and 19th centuries within the large households of the noble Scheels and Bille‑Brahe families. It addresses the household’s role in the manor‑house world and in relation to the noble family, both in a structural and symbolic sense, and investigates the nature of the service relationships.
The project will work exploratively with multiple source groups to gain methodological experience in identifying evidence of these, including in sources the less visible individuals in aristocratic households.
