The manor landscape of Fussingø – a cultural history report
The Danish Research Centre for Manorial Studies prepared a report on the manor landscape of Fussingø in 2021-2023. The publication of the report was supported by Hedeselselskabet.
The report explains, based on a broad group of sources, how and to what extent the landscape around Fussingø has been shaped by the more than 500 years of estate farming that has taken place in the area. The report points out, among other things, how road courses still bear witness to an infrastructure that, on the overall level, seems to have taken shape in the late 16th century, while numerous preserved dikes demonstrate the great influence of agricultural forms on the development of the landscape in the late 18th century. The first decades of the 20th century are also seen to have left their lasting mark on the landscape in the form of a number of still standing buildings – including several stylistically related staff residences built in various places on the estate.
The aim of the report, in addition to the concrete explanation, was also to prepare a modus vivendi for how manor landscapes can be described systematically and for how their qualities are articulated at a time when interest in the exploitation of open land is intensifying.
